Boy’s & Girls Club of America: Hurricane Katrina Aftermath
The latest information on Boys & Girls Clubs' response
(As of 9/16/05)
Damage from Hurricane Katrina encompassed some 90,000 square miles across three states. Authorities estimate that the total property and infrastructure damage sustained along the Gulf Coast could amount to $200 billion.

Impact on Boys & Girls Clubs
This crisis on the Gulf Coast is ongoing and ever changing. Here is what we know about the impact on Clubs as of this writing: Some 20 Club facilities were affected across the Gulf Coast. While the full extent of damage is still not known, particularly in flooded areas of New Orleans (all Clubs there are in low-income areas) our current assessment includes:

New Orleans, La. –
Seven Clubs temporarily closed; four destroyed.
Naval Air Station Youth Center in New Orleans, La. –
One Club heavily damaged.
Biloxi/Gulfport, Miss. – Seven Clubs. Five of the seven units and administrative office destroyed.
Keesler AFB Youth Center/BGC in Biloxi, Miss. –
One unit closed; severe damage.
Mobile, Ala.–
Two Clubs flooded; third Club sustained roof damage.
Moss Point/Pascagoula, Miss. – Lost three of five sites.

Aiding Displaced Children
Clubs have opened their doors to hurricane victims and their families need three things: staff, supplies and transportation. In areas with a large number of displaced children, BGCA is working with existing Clubs to add additional staff, supplies and services in schools and shelters. Where there are smaller numbers of displaced children, BGCA is encouraging Clubs to provide free membership in a Boys & Girls Club located near hurricane shelters and relocated families nationwide. All Clubs are to seek out children in crisis. Clubs throughout the country are responding and have offered their facilities as shelters, serving displaced families and youth at no charge. Some are also offering staff and financial support.

Helping Affected Clubs
In badly afflicted areas, Club professionals are without jobs – and many, as citizens of the surrounding devastated community – are also without homes and property. BGCA plans to create a repository of nationwide Club job information that will be accessible to all Gulf Coast staff that have been displaced by the loss of their Club or disruption of their community.

Future Coordination
BGCA has established a team to coordinate response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The approach will be two-pronged: coordination of direct aid to Clubs and Club professionals; and effective management of donations and special funding. Your contribution will aid Clubs in serving the thousands of children whose lives are disrupted by this disaster.
