The Building Code Standards Committee and the State Building Code Commission announce the adoption of the National Electrical Code 2002 edition as the electrical code for the State of Rhode Island effective August 1,2002. This edition replaces the 1996 edition of the NEC which has been in effect since May of 1997. State law recognizes a 90-day "grandfather" clause allowing a building owner or contractor to utilize the previous code under certain conditions for projects not yet permitted. Projects already permitted are also allowed to be completed under the previous edition.
